Justice Ssemogerere Flags Off First High Court Criminal Session in Kajjansi

Earlier today, Justice Karoli Lwanga Ssemogerere officially flagged off the first-ever High Court criminal session to be held in Kajjansi under the Entebbe High Court Circuit, marking a significant milestone in taking justice services closer to the people.

According to the cause list signed by the Entebbe High Court Assistant Registrar, HW Butanula Rashida, a total of 41 cases will be handled during session. Of these, sexual offences account for 15 cases, Murder has seven files and Aggravated Robbery has five. 

The other cases to be handled are Malicious Damage to Property, False Pretence, Criminal Trespass, Threatening Violence, Neglect to Prevent a Felony, Forgery, Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm and Failing to Control Noise.

The day began with a courtesy call on Lady Justice Nabakooza Flavia Kalungi, the Resident Judge of the Entebbe High Court, highlighting coordination and leadership at the station ahead of the session.

Thereafter, he proceeded to Kajjansi, where he inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Uganda Police Force before addressing a gathering of court users at the court hall.

Justice Ssemogerere went on to preside over a pre-session meeting attended by key justice actors, including advocates on state and private brief, state prosecutors, police officers, prison officials, and assessors.

He emphasised the need for timely dispensation of justice and called upon all participants to work collaboratively to ensure that the session is concluded within the scheduled timeframe. He underscored the importance of coordination, efficiency, and professionalism in delivering justice.

The meeting also laid the groundwork for further preparations, including a planned visit to Kigo Prison, particularly the women's section, to identify vulnerable and special interest groups that may benefit from prioritization during the session.

The meeting was attended by the Assistant Registrar, HW Butanula Rashida; the Chief Magistrate, HW Karungi Olga; and Magistrate Grade I HW Olupot Pascal, alongside other justice sector stakeholders.
